Consumer Unit Upgrades

Consumer unit and fuse board replacement in Andover.

What’s involved

The consumer unit is the heart of a home’s electrics, and a lot of houses around Andover still have boards from the 1970s and 80s with rewirable fuses or no RCD protection at all. A modern consumer unit adds RCD or RCBO protection to every circuit, so a fault trips the power instead of starting a fire or giving someone a shock.

A replacement takes most of a day. We test every circuit first, so any existing faults are found and fixed rather than hidden behind a new board, then fit a metal-clad unit with the right protection for each circuit, surge protection where it makes sense, and label everything clearly.

The work is notifiable, so it’s certified and registered with Building Control on your behalf. Insurers, mortgage lenders and letting agents increasingly ask for this certificate, and it’s a straightforward way to bring an older property up to a safe standard.

Common questions

What people ask before booking consumer unit upgrades.

How long is the power off for a consumer unit change?

Usually four to six hours. We test every circuit before fitting the new board, which is where any existing faults show up, then fit, test and label. You’ll have power back the same day.

Do I need surge protection?

Current regulations expect a surge protection device in most new consumer units, and with the amount of electronics in a modern home it’s worth having. We fit it as standard unless there’s a reason not to.

Which areas do you cover for consumer unit upgrades?

Everywhere within roughly 20 miles of Andover: Test Valley and north Hampshire, east Wiltshire including Tidworth, Amesbury and Salisbury, and west Berkshire including Newbury and Hungerford. If you’re just outside that, ask.
